Mission Statement
GIG of Whidbey Island® is a branch of the Gluten Intolerant Group(GIG), a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our Mission is to provide support to persons with gluten intolerance, including celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten sensitivity. The Whidbey Island Gluten Intolerance Group serves the communities throughout the island from Clinton in the south to Oak Harbor in the north.
Recent History
The Whidbey Island Gluten Intolerance Group informally formed in September 2007 with 12 people in attendance, and now serves over 120 families on the island. In April 2008, we joined GIG as an official branch to the national organization.
The Goals of our group include
1. To educate people in the community about gluten intolerance and encourage those with symptoms to seek diagnosis.
2. To gain support for gluten free products and services in our locale.
3. To share our concerns, recipes, resources, experiences and successes in living with this healthful lifestyle.
4. To solicit local restaurants to provide gluten free menu options and keep a current list of such establishments.
Meetings
The group meets regularly with occasional guest speakers talking about various issues affecting those with gluten intolerance as well as informal gatherings to get to know each other and share information and concerns.
