About our GIG Events

  • You don’t need to be a member to attend. All are welcome.
  • Often our gatherings include a potluck gathering –please bring a gluten free dish to pass and your recipe.
  • If you are new to gluten free, please just come and enjoy the day. This will reduce the possibility of cross contamination until you get comfortable and gluten free in your own kitchen.
  • Please include a complete list of ingredients–some people have other allergies, too. It is helpful to bring product boxes as well.
  • Main dishes are always welcome and in short supply. Salads, breads, relishes and desserts are also welcome.

About Us
Our mission is to fulfill GIG’s mission on a local and regional level through programs tailored to our communities.  The Gluten Intolerance Group’s mission is to provide support to persons with gluten intolerances, including celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, and other gluten sensitivities, in order for them to live healthy lives. Members of GIG of Central and South Texas participate in the meetings in Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi. The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter whether you live in one of these metropolitan areas or in one of the smaller communities; your membership in GIG of Central and South Texas makes you eligible to participate in all of our activities at all of our locations. Members of GIG of Central and South Texas exchange information and discuss medical and dietary topics relating to gluten sensitivity at our meetings and through our branch newsletter. We have speakers at some meetings, but the most important thing we provide is an opportunity for people with celiac disease, other gluten intolerances, or dermatitis herpetiformis to share experiences and learn from each other. Every issue of our monthly newsletter, Living Well Gluten Free, is filled with interesting and useful articles. Our objective is to help our members as they progress from a cursory knowledge of gluten intolerance or the gluten-free diet to an in-depth knowledge that enables them to protect their health or the health of family members. We also provide tips on living gluten-free, let you know about new gluten-free products and sources, share experiences and recipes, help you dine out and travel gluten-free, and try to keep you coming back for more!

Mission Statement

GIG of Whidbey Island® is a branch of the Gluten Intolerant Group(GIG), a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Our Mission is to provide support to persons with gluten intolerance, including celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten sensitivity.

The Whidbey Island Gluten Intolerance Group serves the communities throughout the island from Clinton in the south to Oak Harbor in the north.

Recent History

The Whidbey Island Gluten Intolerance Group informally formed in September 2007 with 12 people in attendance, and now serves over 120 families on the island. In April 2008, we joined GIG as an official branch to the national organization.

The Goals of our group include

1. To educate people in the community about gluten intolerance and encourage those with symptoms to seek diagnosis.
2. To gain support for gluten free products and services in our locale.
3. To share our concerns, recipes, resources, experiences and successes in living with this healthful lifestyle.
4. To solicit local restaurants to provide gluten free menu options and keep a current list of such establishments.

Meetings

The group meets regularly with occasional guest speakers talking about various issues affecting those with gluten intolerance as well as informal gatherings to get to know each other and share information and concerns.
